On the way back from the Pioneer Trek...

...my husband's wagon fell off the road. His station wagon!

They had just finished up their trek experience (Which went great, by the way.) and had swung through McDonald's to get dinner. My husband's inspection sticker had expired and a cop pulled him over. As he pulled off the road, there wasn't much shoulder, so he pulled partially into the grass and weeds along the side of the road. Only, the grass and weeds were concealing a ditch. His left wheels slid off and the rest of the car followed.

In the car with him were 4 of the youth from the trip, including our son Marvin. Miraculously, no one was hurt, not even the car. A tow truck pulled it out and except for a scratch on the forward door and some mud, there was no evidence it had just been in a ditch on its side. Even the sideways super size sodas in the center console managed not to leak!

The kids thought it was great. They were hanging in their seatbelts sideways, laughing and taking pictures of themselves. A lot of the people from the trek stopped to offer assistance and take pictures. It looked like an Amish convention on the side of the road.

P.S. The cop felt sorry for him and didn't give him a ticket. The tow truck cost a lot less than the ticket would have. But, we still think it is an extreme technique for getting out of a ticket and don't recommend it!

  3. How cool that no one got hurt and there was very little damage to the car. I am glad someone thought to take pictures! What a great story this makes. :-)

  4. AAAAHHHHH!!! I am so glad no one was hurt, and that the car was alright. I sure that little stop to McDonalds was well worth it after that long trek. I am glad they had a good time. It was definately a good way to get out of a ticket!

  5. How scary and embarrassing, but at least no one was hurt! Your hubby will probably never live it down... That's nice that he didn't get the ticket!

  6. It wasn't the driver's fault. The car just recognized the State Trooper to be the alpha dog and it just laid on it's side in submission. I am sure the driver looked forlorn enough to sway the Trooper not to give him a ticket. Great that no one was hurt (including the car).

  8. Great way to get out of a ticket, although I don't think I'd like to try that one. I'm glad no one was hurt and that they all had a great time on the trek!

  10. I'm so glad this is something we can laugh about and no one got hurt. He was just adding an element of "reality" to the trek...right?!

  11. It's going to be really difficult to convince that cop that Mormon's aren't really Amish people! Glad everyone is okay... but most importantly that no soda was lost that day. (wink wink!)

  12. That is too funny. Great story and way to end the pioneer trek!

My husband did the exact same thing one time when he was trying to turn around. He didn't see the ditch until it was too late.

  13. I'm so glad nobody was hurt - that looks awful!!

I had to read down to understand why they were dressed that way ... it certainly would look curious to people driving by!!

  14. Hi Nettie... I have read your blog before and I love it. I remember your beautiful murals in your home/nursery. (photos, that is) I would love to learn how to do that!

This is the best laugh I've had in a long time. I of course am not laughing AT you/your husband, because that is a miserable thing to have happen, but what luck! My registration sticker is expired too... I'd better get it fixed ASAP! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! It's fun to meet new people... and you're not a lurker!

  17. Hi Nettie, I was just browsing through your blog! I tried not to laugh when I saw this picture!! What a sight! I am sure that this might have seemed strange to people passing who didn't know why the Amish had suddenly started driving cars!! LOL!

We went to trek a couple of years ago. WOW! It was an amazing experience!!! I would jump at the chance to do it again!
